Elite Training Camp 2007

It all started on April 5th when 21 nervous girls turned up at Sandhurst Military Academy. Not knowing quite what to expect definitely achieved the primary aim of bringing us closer together as a team and sharing our fears of army life in those anxious few moments after our arrival. Certainly a world away from hair straighteners and girly lacrosse cheers! Craig from IDG and Gemma Morgan, our Performance Director, opened the camp and gave us a brief tour of our new home for the next four days. Sandhurst is absolutely beautiful and set in stunning surroundings. It epitomises discipline, toughness and professionalism – characteristics that the Welsh team are aspiring to and have gone some way to achieving thanks to our stay at Sandhurst.
Within one hour of arrival we were out on the parade ground being put through our paces in a full on army circuit session with one of the PTI’s (Physical Training Instructor). I think it was quite a novel experience for the PTI’s, if not an enjoyable one, dealing with 21 girls! It was not just the players that took part in every physical training session and every 6 am run but every member of our Management Team as well. Now that’s what I call a team effort!
Over the next few days Stephy, our Head Coach, put in several hours of hard practice with us all on our very own designated lacrosse pitch right outside the front entrance of the new block which boasts to be the biggest brick military building in the world. Perfect surroundings for some very hard training.
As well as all the physical training Craig and Rob from the Inspirational Development Group put our brains to the test with some ‘think outside the box’ activities. Whilst testing our ability to work together and showing leadership skills it was also a huge amount of fun if not extremely competitive as you would expect!
The moment came that we had all been talking about since finding out about our trip to Sandhurst: the dreaded army assault course! Decked out in our very attractive white helmets and with two PTI’s shouting out various instructions we were ready to go. Scaling walls, crawling under barbed wire, monkey bars, cold water, rope swings, high nets and tunnels; you name it we did it! A lot was accomplished that day by many people, fears were conquered, courage and toughness shone through and most importantly a very strong sense of camaraderie and teamship were formed.
They say Perfect Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance- well the Welsh squad were definitely prepared for the Home Internationals and it was now up to us!
